Founded by the educationalist Margaret Byers in 1859, the college taught a range of academic subjects. As well as Greek and Latin, girls could study science-subjects usually not considered suitable for young women. The high results achieved by the students in Intermediate Board public examinations helped change attitudes to female intellectual ability.
