WHERE THE MOUNTAINS OF MOURNE ... (OCTOBER 1980)

SDLP leader John Hume and his deputy Seamus Mallon, out for a walk on Newcastle beach. A lot of the sand has gone from the beach now, replaced by stones. Hume, the Nobel prize winner, and Mallon, deputy first minister when the new power-sharing executive was first established at Stormont, have since taken something of a back seat. At the time this picture was taken they were the leading faces of northern nationalist politics.
