WAITING (JUNE 1999)

Falls Road mother of ten Jean McConville was abducted by the IRA in 1972. She became known as one of ‘the disappeared’ — people whose bodies were not returned after they were murdered, The IRA eventually said Mrs McConville had been buried at a beach on the shores of Carlingford Lough in County Louth. Here her daughter and son-in-law wait while digging takes place. The dig was abandoned when nothing was found. However, in August 2003, her body was accidentally found by members of the public while they were walking on Shelling Hill beach. A post mortem found that she had a bullet wound to the back of the head.
