Clarke joined Clan na Gael in the United States. He was arrested during the Dynamite campaign in 1883 and was to spend fifteen years in jail. He returned to Ireland in 1907 to help reorganise the IRB. The first signantory of the Proclamation of Independence, he was executed on 3 May 1916.
