Queen's College quadrangle under cultivation, 1943.
Sir Basil Brooke, minister of agriculture (and later prime minister), aimed to have 250,000 acres under the plough to increase food supplies. Potatoes, carrots and cabbage were grown on the Stormont estate; golf clubs cultivated corn on their fairways; and Queen's University cultivated its grass lawns.
