O'Connell as the 'Irish Ogre'.
Cartoon entitled 'The Irish Ogre fattening on the finest pisantry' [sic]. This cartoon, which appeared 8 July 1843, is signed "Shallabala." Daniel O'Connell, sitting on bags of "Irish Rint" money and wielding the "REPEAL" club, is spooning peasants out of a cauldron labelled "AGITATION SOUP." The vapour rising from the pot spells out "Finest Pisantry in the World." The penny-a-month rate of ' Catholic Rent' was designed primarily to broaden membership of the Catholic Association, though at its peak, it brought in 1,000 per month.
