INLA GUARD OF HONOUR (DECEMBER 1983)

The UVF shot Joe Craven, from the nationalist Bawnmore district, on his way to ‘sign on’ at the labour exchange. The INLA admitted he was one of its members the following day. I was allowed in to take this picture during his wake. There were angry scenes at the funeral when mourners and police clashed during an attempt to remove gloves and a beret from the coffin. Joe Craven was twenty-five years old. Seven years earlier, loyalists had killed his father when they bombed a bar.
