ALL THAT'S MISSING IS BARRY FITZGERALD ... (MAY 1980)

Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich was deeply intelligent, but had the common touch. Always affable and ready with a joke or a laugh, he would remember your name even if he hadn’t seen you for a while. He greeted me one night saying, ‘Here’s the “dacent” man from Crossmaglen.’ Not a lot of people know I have south Armagh roots. ‘Are you really from there?’ someone asked me afterwards. Here, the Cardinal is posing with Church of Ireland Primate John Armstrong at a Tourist Board function. The men were close friends. It looks like a scene right out of The Quiet Man.
